I once read a book by Chika Onyeani titled The Capitalist Nigga. I have equally read critiques of the same literary piece. Some readers appear offended by the book. They question how and why he would write such things about his people. And I said to myself: isn’t that the problem?
And here is what I am thinking. Why is Africa the most endowed continent on earth yet with the poorest people? Why is spirituality such a big deal, with churches all over, and such examples as women not putting on a pair of trousers for fear that they will offend God? It is good to revere God and worship Him. But, does God, Creator of all things and Owner of the earth and its fullness (Psalm 24:1), demand such an approach to life? Millions of believers are wallowing in poverty and calling the wealthy children of the devil. Is there some truth to that?
We read in John 3:16 that God so loved the world; that means God loves everyone! Yet we hear a popular word among believers called “worldly” – worldly music, worldly dressing, worldly this, and worldly that. I know the Bible says friendship with the world is enmity with God (James 4:4). But, what exactly is that verse telling you? When you have a true friend, you become committed to them to the extent that you may lay down your life for that friend as Jesus did for the world (John 15:13). Friendship with the world is a commitment to a life that neither glorifies nor honor God. Do you understand?
That said, why are you broke when there is so much money in the world? You are sitting on gifts that God gave you to pave the way for your wealth. Deuteronomy 8:18 says God has given you the power to get wealth. How? The ability to become wealthy is IN you, whether you realize it or not. If you miss this, then you are missing your very life. Where is the power? You may ask. It is hidden in your gift and brought to manifestation through the channel of your mind. Therefore, guard your heart (mind) with all diligence (Proverbs 4:23) because out of it proceeds everything to do with your life.
Here is the answer. You require understanding. You are broke because you have failed to apply your mind, to UNDERSTAND how money works. But, the children of this world, those whom the Christian has labeled worldly, understand how money works. That is why they are rich. Why did Jesus suggest in Luke 16:9 that you make friends with unrighteous mammon? So that you may get an understanding concerning the working of the currency system of the world. You are not called upon to embrace evil ways but guess what? Money is money. The dollar is the dollar, whether it is in the offering basket in church or the till in a nightclub. And it will purchase what you need, irrespective of what you think. Therefore, the Bible advises, in all they getting, get understanding (Proverbs 4:7).
How? Read books. Connect with the right people. Attend the right seminars and webinars. Learn a new relevant skill. Make the right friends; avoid people you hang out with who add no value to your life. Save money. Invest! Become someone with a skill that is sought after.
You see, if you do not make your life valuable, money has no business locating you because there is nothing attracting money to you. Money is attracted to value. Do you see? That is why sportsmen, for example, earn so much for doing something fun. It is the value in their lives that attracts money.
Ask yourself this question: what is my value? Why should money come to me? Why should anyone pay me? (Please, do not be foolish to think money should come to you because you have a qualification; your value is in what you can DO, not a piece of paper you can show). If you can figure out your value, then you are on your way to building wealth.
